This time I was pretty good about documentation, so read on and learn all about the Bookah art installation. Records of brain storming, prepatory sketches, photos of the build and early versions all lie below...
This sketch is actually from a year ago, grabbed from an old sketchbook. The idea at the time was that old books smell really great and it would be awesome to have a device like this.
Attempts to organize brainstorms with arrows and boxes. Click for full size.
The idea to make it a future-product led to all sorts of intriguing connotations. An ealry but ultimatly unworkable idea was to have a light source shining out the vents to jump on the old enlightenment pun.
An early prototype.
And the final design.
Construction begins - with the limitations of a makeshift workbench...
A rainy day in the workshop.
Once the box was finished, the pages began to go in. Only the dankest books were chosen; torn up to maximize surface area.
The books begin to pile up, a mixture of whole texts and crumpled pages creating a medley of alluring wood scents.

The completed Bookah. Hoses eventually had to be shortened to ensure suffcient air flow from the main chamber. But here it is with attached surgical masks, caution stickers and a finished paint job.
