See below for prepatory sketches from Handmade Utopia and In The Future (as well as a bonus pic). Right-Click, View Image for full size.

The first sketch is yours truly, but I more or less vaporized the face in the final version of Space Shuttle (A Romantic View).

Some thumbnails from figuring out the composition.

The third image includes reference sketches, AND The Universal Symbol For The Big Bang! Which I think is totally awesome; do wild-haired astrophysicists draw those arrows on their chalkboards and people know what's being referenced?

Some sketches for the galaxy that appears in the background of Alienation, as well as notes from a lecture by author Randy Martin, apparently.

Pages from hatching out the plans for Conversion, I also had a lot of fun looking up and selecting which cities to include on the scroll.

And to close out the theme of science, here is a quick shot of fake science making room for real science; fake science is here represented by Perceptor and the later by one of the Mars Rovers. The space station environment is from an illustration of future space travel made some time in the 80's. I am fascinated by visions of the future, particulaly ones from the past, andI love how one person can envision the future as a sterile white labratory, while someone from the exact same time can be imagining the future as a battlezone for robots that turn into cars.
Expect more 80's science illustrations in the future.
